So the other day I was at Anthropologie trying on clothes I know I can't afford. I love this gray lacey jacket thing but was not interested in the $118 price tag. BUT, thanks to online shopping I found this white one for $39! I am no stranger to RIT dye either so I might just have a gray jacket thing in my future after all.

My favorite blog in the whole world is My Mom, The Style Icon. Everyday I find myself drooling over some stranger's mother who was captured in an amazing outfit and posted on a blog many years later. I want to look like all those stylish ladies. And thanks to a little thing called "online shopping" I now can.

Day gowns came back this year but they seemed a little too J-Lo for me. Moms did it better. And you can do vintage.

Why did all moms love dressing like sailors? And why can't we? We can!!! I promise.

Books are amazing because they make great gifts and are cheap and if you are seriously broke all you need is an ID to get a library card. If you have no proof of identification you most likely aren't on a computer stumbling across the only blog with less page views than this.

So...with that said, if you need to read away the weeks in between Thanksgiving and whatever you celebrate in December I highly recommend the following:

Put this in your bathroom and get cozy. Your welcome.

Coffee tables will never be safe again when this book is displayed on it. Not sure what that means but get it and find out!

I saw someone reading this on the subway the other day and it inspired me. I watched all his movies a couple years ago so now I'll try my hand at reading his books. Color me laughing for several months!

I haven't read this one yet but it's on my list and if we run into each other we'll have something to talk about. Finally! And if you don't want to know about the lives of Carol King and her weird controlling husband and who "You're So Vain" is actually about then we don't have much in common anyway. This store is amazing. If you happen to be in Union Square in NYC anytime soon please do yourself and everyone you need to buy gifts for a favor and stop in. You will leave happy (and sad that you are leaving) and with a large tote bag full of your entire shopping list. Unless you are buying gifts for children. Don't go in here in that is the case.

Sorry y'all - this poor girl got herself a jiz-ob and is now making money!!! Whassssuuup?!?!? That means my e-shopping has recently gotten a little out of control as I spend my lunch hour (i.e. ten minutes at my desk while i scarf down usually Korean food in record time and make everyone around me uncomfortable) perusing the internet aisles looking for sweet wardrobe enhancers. Bring it!

I bought this jacket and I love it. It's a bit on the pricey side and ultimately does not fit me (a little on the small side) but I still wear it and it's a serious compliment magnet.

This skirt is a must have and it's from Asia which means it's automatically awesome.
I want these because they are cheap, cartoonish and I can walk in them. I bought a chunky wedge and seriously am a full on palsy victim in them because I have no skillz. None.

I probably have 5 bags that look like this but some dude tried grabbing at my purse last night and so I'm thinking I need more messenger and less over the shoulder if I'm going to be the anti-mugging bait I've always wanted to be.

They have an exclusive line from this woman who I have never heard of but most likely gets mistaken for Rachel Ray, which is unfortunate. Falling Into Fall...isn't that a cute headline?

Fall is coming and that means cute sweaters, a light jacket and scarves! Everyone looks good in the Fall because they are covered up. Those girls on the subway who wear tights in July no longer have to be self-conscious about whatever it is about their legs that they are self-conscious about. It's a good thing for everyone. Here's what my closet will look like this Fall:

Get yer coat on. No, seriously, it's gonna get chilly outside!

One jumper is all you need - also an investment but I swear you'll wear it at least once a week. I know the people I work with must think I am a serious dirtbag, but I can't help it that jumpers are easy and comfortable and flattering and look different depending on what you wear underneath it. Here is one option.

This year I think I'm finally going to invest in some Sven boots. You can get them any way you want (it's call customizing) and you can get them resoled every year for a mere $30. So while they are a big cost up front, they will feel brand new every year. AND they are water proof and lined in something soft and warm that comes from a farm animal most likely. TRANSLATION: worth every penny.

This is called the Green Point Dress and I live in Greenpoint so I figured it was a sign and so I bought it and when I get it I'm gonna wear it. Done.

I forgot to mention that I am a future Bridezilla! It's very exciting and even more exciting is going to be trying to throw a killer party on a serious dime. First things first - the dress. Please send me any suggestions you might have of where I can find cheap awesome dresses that just so happen to be white. Here is what I'm going for - short and fun. I've found a few dresses in photos I've seen of other people's weddings and also just photos of dresses that I think are awesome. But I have no idea where to actually find these dresses.

French Connection Is Having a Huge Sale!

FCUK (so suggestive - we get it) is an overpriced mall store. I know. But I will say that their stuff does fit very well and I've enjoyed quite a few of their items. They are having a huge sale right now because apparently I'm not the only one who thinks their clothes are not worth the money. But, I love a sale! I suggest going into a store if you can because they have much better stuff than the online store has to offer.

I love a high waisted skirt. I suggest getting this at the store though. I feel like FC makes the fatal flaw of using really heavyweight fabrib and so their skirts feel like a mother effing sack. Not cool, FC. Not cool at all. But still quite cute.

I think this top is real cute but it feels like something I would have worn in 2005. Not that that's a bad thing but I might be too old for this. But I kinda want to try it out...

I swear to the bones of the great Houdini that I have this top in my closet. I'm quite pleased with it and I highly suggest you be pleased with it as well.

I swear to the bones of sweet baby jesus I'm wearing this top right now but under a black jumper and it's pretty much the cutest thing I've had on all week. I love it. Not for 88 bones I don't but I'll throw down 40 for it. Fo' Sho'.

Anna Sui is Coming to Target! 500 Exclamation Points!

So I am way behind the times but I just found out that Anna Sui is hopping on the Target train and I really couldn't be happier. I'm dying of excitement and the line is inspired by Gossip Girl. Of course. And you know what? I do not mind one bit. My Fall wardrobe has "Blair-chic" written all over it. I pretty much love every piece but I could do without the edgy Jenny Humphrey looks. Not interested.

The line hits the stores September 13th and will only be available till October 17th. My online shopping skills are going to be put to the test but I'm working on my clicks per minute in order to ensure my shopping cart is full and ready upon the line being posted.

Now, this is not for the folks who won't spend more than $20 a dress. It's a little more for people who will spend, just not that much. I like to call them sophisticated cheapskates. Summer Is Here

It happened. Pretty much exactly like I predicted. Mother Nature pulled a fast one on us East Coasters and went from frigid cold to steamy hot in a matter of hours. So much for Spring! So Summer is here and that means it's time to start thinking about what you can wear without visibly sweating through it (if you have a problem like I do) and what you can wear that is cute and easy and breezy and will make you a beautiful cover girl. Here we go!

Um, I think everyone should have wooden earrings this summer.

Spring is here and even though I am unemployed there are several things I'm coveting for the warm weather. Operation: Get A Job is in full effect so until I actually succeed I need to pinch more pennies, but once I cash in that first pay check all bets are off. I plan to single handedly turn this bitch of an economy around - watch out retailers, I WILL be back!

I'm actually not going to wait for a paycheck and will instead use $30 from my unemployment check to get these to me ASAP. Check please!

Every girl needs a summer LBD (little black dress, duh) and I think this one might be mine.

First of all, sorry for the lame title. Second of all, if you live in NYC you live for weather forecasts like tomorrow's - 58 degrees! Which means girls will be prematurely busting out their new Spring dresses from Anthropologie and frat boys will be wearing shorts. And me? I will be pressing "submit order" at Lulu's, getting my wardrobe ready for picnics in the park and nights out on the Jersey shore - yeah, girl!

This necklace is the one thing that is a definite no matter what must have purchase.

I Got Robbed!

Hi y'all,

I know it's been a while but my apartment got broken into and my computer was stolen. Yep. It sucks a big phatty, I know. My window was cracked and homeboy climbed right in and helped himself to my Mac laptop, my iPod, $400 in cash I had for my movers (I moved the day after I found out - not fun) and some jewelry. The computer is obviously the worst as it has just about my entire life on it. The window that he got into was off the fire escape so even if you have a window that is at all close to the fire escape PLEASE close and lock it at all times. I am freaked out because I left that window open all the time because it gets hot as balls in my place.

And PLEASE do me a favor right now and get renter's insurance. I have it and will be getting reimbursed for most of my stuff - including the cash. Talk about cheap and fashionable - I pay about $200 a year for the insurance - not bad considering I got about $3,000 worth of stuff stolen. Oy! Be safe, ladies!

And when I get my money and computer back, I'll tell you all about the cute spring fashions I'm seeing around. Weeee!

I just signed my lease!!! Yes, very exciting. Thank you, thank you. Oh, you are too kind. Stop! So yes, while it is very exciting I just signed away my entire savings and am nervous about making rent in Feb. So instead of drowning my sorrows with a new dress I must just sit back and look at all the things I want and cannot afford. Woe is me, I know. I know. Shhhh...

So Kenny and I are moving into a seriously crazy adult condo that couldn't sell. It's all kinds of fancy pants and our weird small furniture will look very bizarre against all the stainless steel appliances. That's right, people, there's a freakin' dishwasher! So I'm going to save up all my money and hope for this couch. Kenny said he doesn't like orange but I think it'll grow on him. I just want a friggin sectional! Dare to dream.

I also think these lil' stools would be great in our new place and I'd like to use them as plant stands. You get two for $54 - can't argue with that!

I want this wood link necklace from Erica Weiner. I have a wood necklace and I love it so much and get all kinds of compliments on it. I got it at a thrift store though for $3. Oh well.

I want this hat. I also want it to not be $88 but I want it. Now that I know I can't buy anything I'm putting up stuff I wouldn't be able to afford anyway. Makes it less traumatic. Ew, I'm being gross. I'll stop talking like this. I don't actually ever talk like this, fyi.

I'm kinda sorta not really trying to do that here with this lil' baby of a site but they seem much more organized and professional about things so I say trust them more than you trust me. When I get married, er, I shouldn't be so confident, but IF I ever get married I'm going to register here because their plates and mugs and everything is just too much for my lil ol' brown eyes to handle. I went into the store yesterday on Broadway and it's really the best. While I wanted pretty much everything, I focused in on my self-control and left with a present for Starr's birthday and two new mugs for me! Hip hop hooray! Hooooo....heyyyy hoooo....

I'm not telling what I got for Starr as I think she is the only person who reads this blog but I'll show you what I got and what I want. My birthday is in June and considering I'll officially be OLD (I think that happened last year actually) it's time I started getting adult presents. All I want is to have people over in my house so I can serve them a gorgeous cheese plate on what looks like a sheet of college ruled loose leaf. Writing a high school note never looked so good. Unless you were one of those girls who could fold the note into some crazy tucked in origami triangle sculpture.

This nursery rhyme-chic design is brand new to the store and I'm so on board. These cereal bowls feature all the a-listers: Jack & Jill, Big Bad Wolf, Mary and her shadow of a little lamb - the big wigs!

This mug is matches the above bowl and is holding a cup of strong ass coffee with soy cream as I type this and it's the cutest thing that has happened to coffee in my kitchen in a long time. Sorry for the run-on sentence, but even coffee deserves a new outfit every once in a while.

I actually got my coffee another adorbs.org outfit - this darling lil' number to represent where it comes from. Although I'm pretty sure my weird Cup Full O'Nuts or whatever it's called coffee brand was picked and ground by a four year old in Columbia. Whatever. But isn't this a cute mug???

Dear Fieldbinder is one seriously awesome and expensive store that is in Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. They have high fashion that I surely cannot afford. But starting 12/27 they are having a serious blowout sale on ALMOST (key word) everything! Anywhere from 30% to 75% off! I got a new dress!!! I got it at a very fancy pants store that I love browsing at but usually leave defeated because I can't afford a single thing. Except they started carrying a very affordable line! And I picked this dress out before I even knew it only cost $62!!! The brand is called MINKPINK and they are carried at Urban Outfitters and maybe Macy's or some other big big mall type store (yes, also known as a department store). They are from the big Outback Steakhouse - Australia!!

I used to have this old lady head lamp and it was super awesome and then I have a friggin subletter who friggin broke it. Moral of the story is don't let strangers live in your stuff. Especially if it's your favorite stuff. But good thing I have cheap taste and love the internet because that means there is no such thing as one of a kind!!! Woo Hoo!

Gifts are awesome because they are the perfect reason to get things you don't need. And I have no need whatsoever for these log bowls but dear lord, how friggin' cool are they?!?! I'm really into them. I don't even know what I'll do with them but I'm happy just to look at them.

My boyfriend (sup sup!!) and I are moving in together in March. This means that I'm officially an adult and am making mature decisions and one of those decisions is to have weird things like coasters laying around the house. And so these cool letter coasters from Veer on are my list.

Books Are The Best Presents

Books really are they gift that keep on giving because if you are anything like me you find joy in swapping books with friends. Oh joy! So here are some great books that are out there right now that seem to appeal to everyone. Or I'll find a little something for everyone. I highly suggest supporting your local bookstore. Word on Franklin St. in Greenpoint, Brooklyn is far and away my favorite. If you can't get out due to fear of freezing, check out Abe Books online - they are like the independent Borders with possibly the best selection of used books for $1.00. I am a teenager when it comes to reading so these are all really great books for teens OR adults. Most are girl-friendly but I'm gonna include some dude ones too. First off - Prep. This is the ultimate "oh my god that was my freaking life as a teen" book. Not in that I was shipped off to boarding school, but more in that I over thought everything and the book encapsulates every feeling I've ever had - some of which I still have! Ugh (boots).

Okay, I have the Prep for boys - and it's non-fiction! Paul Feig, the author of Kick Me: Adventures in Adolescence is responsible for the life-changing television Freaks & Geeks. Along with Judd Apatow, I owe many hours of bliss to him. If you do not know this show, then go and buy it. Don't rent it. That will not do. Buy and watch it and fall in love for the first time. Okay, so he wrote this book and it's filled with embarrassing stories of masturbation and gym class. And yes, they go together.

Again, this could apply to a cool teenager or yourself or really to anyone with a sense of humor and the slightest knowledge of who Motley Crue is. The Dirt is one of the juiciest, most insane rock stories ever. Each band member tells their own version of what they were going through during their quick rise to fame and the aftermath of making it big. Think sex, drugs and more sex. Even with a burrito!

So lets say you get The Dirt for a guy, what do you get for his twin sister? Or your other cousin??? While any girl after my own heart would love to get The Dirt, a more obviously girl version of that book is the juicy tell-all I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie. Pamela Des Barres paved the way for every other rock tell-all that came in her wake and if I were a college professor teaching cultural studies I bet I'd teach that this was the start of our tabloid and celebrity culture. This is good. Although be careful how old people are reading these two rock books - there is some seriously graphic stuff, but that makes it all the more exciting for teens, no?

Know a teen with a killer interest? Special Topics in Calamity Physics is one of my all time favorite books. Put it on your list as well as get it for your sister or younger cousin. It's very Dawson's Creek meets Buffy sans the vampires but with all the suspense. I can't recommend it enough!

Have a younger boy you need to buy for? Or maybe it's a young girl? Or maybe it's for your friend who is crafty and nostalgic for their childhood? I cannot tell you how awesome these books are. The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Daring Book for Girls. I have the girls one and have perused the boys one and I love them both. Learn how to make a paper airplane, build a treehouse and the history of princesses. In a nutshell, it's everything you've ever wanted to know. I also like getting gifts on Christmas that allow for you to explore them after all the presents are opened and you are lounging with coffee in your pj's. These books are perfect for that.

So if you need to get a book for your parents and they aren't into stories of teenage woe, then hmmm, I might not be able to help. But perhaps you could get your mom Eat, Pray, Love. That seems to be a mom book. I've never read it but I did interview the author once and she was so nice and gracious. That's a solid combo in my book. For dad? My dad is really into The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. I have no idea what it's about but it seems dad-friendly. It's a joke, people. But you can lighten the mood by telling a great 9/11 joke after you give it to him.

The Cheapest Glasses In The World!

So the other day this girl walks into the store and she has the cutest glasses on and so naturally I tell her how cute they are and then naturally she tells me where she got them - online for $8!!! Prescription and all! I'm all like "SHUP UP!" and she was all like, "No, I swear. The New York Times (or Post, I can't really remember) did an article about a year ago on this blog that is a guide to the cheapest ways to get your glasses. All online and all for less than $20 usually!" With my jaw on the floor I told her in the friendliest of ways, "I just want to punch you in the face I'm so excited." Yes, I actually said this to her and my comment was met with a confused look that made me remember that I can't talk to total strangers the way I talk to my friends. If she ever finds this, I think her name was Erica - Erica, look at me, I never actually wanted to punch you in the face - it is more a term or phrase of endearment. I'm sorry. But thanks for all the info!

So I got my amazing brown coat! It's perfect and I've been looking at Overstock.com since and you know, this webiste is pretty amazing. They have lots of great things that I'd never guess they have. I guess that's the whole point of the website but I just always rolled my eyes at it like it wasn't legit or something. Well, I'm officially sold on the site and am trying to control myself from buying everything on it. Well, lets be honest, not everything. There's a whole lotta criz-ap on there too but you can search around it. Promise.

Look, I'm not saying this is cute or necessarily cheap but the point is that you should take this opportunity at Overstock to buy something cashmere. It's not overrated. I have been wearing one of my sister's cashmere sweaters all night while babysitting my niece and holy moly! The reviews are right - it's too soft soooooo warm. I want to be buried in it when it's my time to take a dirt nap.

Even a super sale at BCBG won't have this dress on sale for $60. Get it!

This lil' dress is PJ-chic and that means that you can wear it to bed and then go straight to work. You don't even have to change! I actually tried this method out a few times in high school. I don't recommend. But give it a try on a weekend just for kicks.

Nordstrom has a great Junior's section. Basically it's because it's a little more sophisticated than your average junior's department. And that is because that rich people shop at Nordstrom's and so they have certain expectations for lil' Tiffany. And Tiffany isn't going shopping at the mall so she can look like a 21st birthday party gone bad. No, no, no. Tiffany will carry herself with confidence and class and will sail through her SAT's as well as her Ivy League early admittance. Oh yes, Tiffany is headed toward greatness (until Junior year when she gets [cue whisper voice]: an abortion). But until then, lets all ride on ol' Tiff's coattails, because they have cute cheap stuff! Hooray for Tiffany!

I call this "El Cantante-chic" or just "J-Lo-chic" but either way it's adorbs and you'll probably feel like a star in it. That alone, is priceless. Except it's not. Because it actually only costs $37!!

So a couple weeks ago I blogged about Mod Cloth's "Ubiquitous Snood" and once I was done writing about how cool it looked I decided to bite the nearly $50 bullet and get one for myself. So I've had it for about a week now and I have to say that this is the best 50 bones I've ever spent on a scarf. I wear it everyday. I get compliments on it all the time. It's super duper soft and it's crazy warm. I have made quite a few poor impulse e-purchases in my day, but this one I can't imagine ever regretting. Except that I opted for the Ivory, which I see myself needing to wash from time to time. But other than that I couldn't recommend it more. And it serves as a bib for when you are eating! (Hence the ivory being a dangerous choice.)

The Great Cape Caper of '08

So I have been eyeing this cape at the boutique since I've been working there and I finally did it last night and bought the thing after getting the OK from Ryan. As soon as I took off the tags and put it on and then tried to get my bag around it I was regretting my decision. Don't get me wrong, I love me a cape. But, how to you carry a bag with them? I think I have to get a bag with a handle that isn't a shoulder bag or something. I'm torn because I love the cape and it makes me feel sophisticated and adult yet I feel completely handicapped once it's on. I finally understand The Diving Bell & The Butterfly. Finally! Not really, but seriously, if you haven't 1) read that book and 2) seen the movie then you are dead to me. Take the two of those and call me in the morning. P.S. - I've had 1.5 glasses of wine.

So this is the cape - judge away. I usually don't say this about models but this cape looks a lot better on me than it does her and I'm not going to wear it with white slacks and a side part. Instead it looks really good with brown and black (boots and tights) as well as jeans.

P.S. If you have any cape friendly suggestions please let me know! I need to learn to master the cape!

Karmaloop.com is a site that has a lot of very affordable cute clothes. I take issue with their model who has spent way too much time at the electric beach, but that's just my issue. And I'm taking it back. I'm taking them all back!

This cowl neck hoodie sweater is a winter staple. I've had one every year and I might need to replace mine as I've worn out the armpits. TMI? Deal.

I never thought I'd see the day that any Ronson child was spotted in JC Penny, but I guess it's a totally cool thing for designers to go slumming in big department stores now-a-days. Even Vera Wang is all up in Kohl's grill. Charlotte Ronson's new JC Penny line "I Heart Ronson" looks cute in the photos but I can't really tell what to make of the individual pieces. Nylon loves it and here are the photos that I stole from them. Her line debuts in February so verdict is out till then! Enjoy!

I got a little carried away with those dresses, but I found another good site called Lulu's that has lots of things that are just as cute for a whole lot cheaper. This site is also the cheapest I have seen BB Dakota clothing sold for - grab it!

Lets all thank Lauren for sending me this site called Penelope's. I took one look and was sold. I was also all like, "dude, I've totaly been here." It's a store in Chicago and if you are ever in the windy city I must direct you there. It's not the cheapest but some of these clothes are seriously kind of amazing. And they don't look like stuff I've been finding at other places, which is key when spending more money. Shall we? We shall. Lets!
